I stand with Jada : Rape victim fights back #IAMJADA

Last week 16-year-old Jada went viral. And it wasn’t because of something positive.

See Jada attended a house party that she assumed was “safe,” because her friend knew the person throwing it.

What Jada didn’t know, however, that the party would change her life forever.

Jada was raped. A harmless house party, as she thought, turned into a nightmare.

Not only was the 16-year-old raped, but she didn’t find out about the horrific act done against her until it was plastered over social media.

The boys who raped Jada took a picture of her and uploaded the photo to the internet.

Photos that included images of her fully clothed on a bed passed out and then lying naked on the floor, still passed out.

And it only gets worse.

Instead of people being outraged by the photo, Jada quickly became “memefied” and people began to mock Jada by taking pictures striking the “jada pose”.

Pathetic.

Exactly how I felt when I heard that Jada was mocked for being raped. No, her peers were not fighting against the rape culture, they were glorifying it in the name of Jada.

This is the very reason why most women who are raped do not report or even talk about it.  Because they feel ashamed, as if it was their fault.

When that photo went viral, Jada could have went into hiding. Became depressed and done something that would have made this story end a little differently.

But the brave 16-year-old decided not to stay silent and stand up against her attackers and the bullying. And I too stand with Jada.

The glorification of the rape culture and the bullying that often goes hand and hand must stop. It is shameful and distressing to know that, she not only has to deal with being raped, but deal with ignorant individuals who find it amusing and make the situation elevate from bad to worse.

On Monday , as a show of solidarity for Jada, her mother Ronan Farrow enlisted the help of social media to show support for Jada by tweeting photos tagged with #IAMJADA. The response has been remarkable.

It takes a lot of courage to tell your story of being raped.  I applaud Jada, women like Jada, and everyone who is standing with Jada. The rape culture should not be glorified and I hope this movement gets others to speak out against these society ills.

I stand with you Jada!
