The hip-hop community is mourning after the death of legendary New York DJ Big Kap who died on Wednesday morning (Feb. 3). In an interview with Billboard, Big Kap’s road manager said the DJ died from a heart attack. He was 45.

Ab said that he spoke to Kap on the phone the prior to his death.

“Last night when I talked to him, he was fine,” he recalls. “He was on the computer at 1AM and then I got the phone call at 4 in the morning from the artist he stays with, Bank Boy Drop. He’s an artist based out of Florida we was actually workin’ on.”

Ab Traxx believes that Kap didn’t have any pre-existing health problems that would lead up to him having a sudden stroke. “He had diabetes but I don’t think it had anything to do with [his death],” he told Billboard.

Before his untimely death, Big Kap was working on the Atlanta-based Internet radio station Highly Unique Radio and developing his artists on Burn Unit Crew. “He just got on this radio station based in Atlanta and he was basically doing the groundwork,” says Ab.

Additionally, Kap just booked a 40-city tour in support of the independent artists in his Burn Unit crew. The Tunnel creator was also in the early stages of making a documentary.
