Grace Moore, a Brooklyn-born music prodigy has become one of the youngest-ever composers featured by a major orchestra.

Grace Moore is a part of the Very Young Composer program

Moore’s piece, entitled Summer, was featured in October by the New York Philharmonic as part of their Very Young Composer program.

The composer, who is only 12 years old, says her work was inspired by current events of the coronavirus and the Black Lives Matter movement.

“I feel that music can change the way other people see the world around them,” Moore said.

Her love for music started as a toddler

In an interview with PIX 11, the young composer said her love of music started at the age of two when her mom bought her a piano.

Grace Moore is currently in the seventh-grade at Poly Prep in Brooklyn.

According to Gary Padmore, the director of the New York Philharmonic’s Very Young Composers program, the objective is to help Moore and kids like her from diverse backgrounds as they tap into their natural creative abilities.

“Every child has the ability to be creative and tell their story,” said Padmore.

Moore feels she is breaking barriers as a young woman of color and wants to inspire others to create and appreciate music.

“I hope everyone follows their hobbies and do what they love,” said Moore.
