Step Afrika!, the internationally renowned dance company dedicated to the art of stepping, hosted its annual gala on Tuesday, June 4, at the Arena Stage.

The Gala brought together enthusiasts of the performing arts to celebrate the rich tapestry of culture and rhythm that Step Afrika! is known for during the past three decades.

Attendees were treated to a captivating evening featuring a retrospective journey through Step Afrika!’s origin story, rooted in Johannesburg, South Africa. The event showcased a selection of videos and performances, highlighting the Company’s evolution over the years.

The highlight of the evening was a performance by Grammy Award-winning artist Smokie Norful alongside Step Afrika!.

Norful’s soulful vocals and electrifying stage presence added an extra dimension of artistry to the company’s riveting performance of the “Wade Suite” from their turnkey program, The Migration: Reflections on Jacob Lawrence.

The Gala also featured dynamic performances by the talented dancers of Step Afrika!, showcasing the vibrant energy and intricate rhythms of stepping, South African Gumboot dance, and Zulu.

From traditional African beats to contemporary choreography, the performances captivated the audience and underscored the universal language of dance.
