Wendy Williams is breaking her silence, saying she’s not cognitively impaired and wants to be freed from her guardianship.

In 2022, Williams was given a diagnosis of frontal lobe dementia and was placed under a guardianship. Since, she says she’s been living in turmoil, stating she has been stripped of her personal and financial freedom.

Wendy Williams wants out of her guardianship

Williams and her niece, television reporter Alex Finnie, have been making their rounds with journalists to get Williams voice heard.

A luxury prison

The former talk show and radio host, 60, first called into The Breakfast Club radio show on Jan. 16, where she talked about the “prison” she said she’s been living in. Williams cried at times and insisted that she’s “not cognitively impaired”.

Finnie said her aunt is basically living in a “luxury prison” in New York City. It’s a small apartment with a chair, a bed, a tv, and a small window.

She feels isolated

Williams says she orders her food and then eats in her bed. She is not allowed to go out without permission. She has a phone that allows her to call out but no one can call her, Williams says. If you try to see her in this facility, you will face harsh questioning even if Williams approves of the visit. She describes the facility as housing people in their 70s to 90s, some who are in wheelchairs.

Williams says she’s given pills daily and doesn’t know what they are for. She also alleged she’s not allowed to see her specialists, specifically the one who manages her Graves disease.

Most of her possessions are in storage if they were not sold like her NYC apartment and her cats.

Wendy Williams fears retaliation for speaking out about guardianship

After The Breakfast Club, Williams also spoke with Don Lemon, Jason Lee, and Harvey Levin from TMZ about the complicated situation she’s in.

The sentiment was the same. Williams explained her guardian has complete control over her finances and where she is living. Williams, who once earned $15 million a year, says she now only has $15 in her possession and fears retaliation for speaking out.

Is Wendy Williams incapacitated?

Williams sounded well, coherent, and her bubbly self.

When asked about her claims if she was cognitively impaired, she said “Do I seem this way?”

Finnie said in dealing and talking with her aunt, she is definitely not incapacitated but couldn’t go into specifics about her aunt’s health issues.

She wants to move Miami with family

Williams says she feels isolated in New York and her desire is to live with her family in Miami.

She was born and raised on the Jersey shore, Asbury Park and Ocean Township, respectively. Williams said once she got in her late 20s, her parents moved to Florida and then later her other immediate family followed suit.

Williams cried when speaking about her father, who is turning 94 soon. She said she’s not sure if she can visit him for his birthday and alleges she hasn’t been allowed to buy a gift for him.

GoFundMe to support Wendy Williams

A GoFundMe has been started by friends of the Williams family to help Williams plight to freedom to return to her “rightful home in Florida.”

“For far too long, Wendy has faced the challenges of being unjustly placed under guardianship and labeled as incapacitated, despite her strong will and determination to live her life independently,” the GoFundMe reads.

At the time of this report, the GoFundMe has raised approximately $21,000 of its $50,000 goal.

“Her current situation is not only unfair but also deeply isolating. The guardian assigned to her has severed her connections with friends and family, leaving her without the support network she so desperately needs. This isolation in New York has made it increasingly difficult for her to maintain her strength and resilience.”

In May 2022, Williams was placed in a guardianship when her Wells Fargo wealth manager claimed she was incapacitated. Williams has been fighting ever since.

Williams said you can support her in her fight by using the hashtag #FreeWendy, sharing her story, and donating to the GoFundMe.

In her interview with Don Lemon, Williams said when she is finally free, she hopes to go back to working on her terms.
