Teacher Yennifer Castillo helps students with college basket giveaway
Castillo is continuing that dedication in ensuring students succeed by creating a College Essentials Basket Giveaway to help first-year students.
“I started this giveaway because I know firsthand how tough it can be to start college without the basics. When I was preparing for my own college journey, my family couldn’t afford everything on my dorm checklist—but thanks to a few generous people who stepped in, I made it. Now, I’m paying it forward”, Castillo said.
Each basket includes bedding, towels, toiletries, school supplies, and other necessities to help ease the transition to campus life.
The Florida A&M University (FAMU) alumni started the giveaway in 2018 after struggling to afford her own college essentials and now fills personalized baskets to support others.
“When I was preparing for my own college journey, my family couldn’t afford everything on my dorm checklist—but thanks to a few generous people who stepped in, I made it. Now, I’m paying it forward”, Castillo said.
GoFundMe
A GoFundMe has been started to help cover supplies and delivery, especially for out-of-town students. Castillo also shares this effort with her growing TikTok audience.
Castillo believes it takes a village and showing students the community cares is important in aiding in their success.
“With your help, we can fill more baskets, uplift more students, and make sure no one feels like they’re starting this journey alone”, the teacher said.
