Nationally celebrated for her award-winning documentaries Black Women in Medicine and The Deadliest Disease in America, as well as acclaimed nonfiction works highlighting Black excellence in STEM, Emery now expands her creative canvas through fiction—delivering a deeply personal narrative.
About Without a Trace
The novel follows Tanya, a teenage girl navigating complex family dynamics and an intense, mysterious relationship with an older man, John L. When he vanishes, Tanya’s life is left in limbo. Nearly two decades later, as a successful filmmaker on the brink of marriage, a phone call unearths buried memories—forcing her to confront the past she thought she’d outrun.
But Without a Trace is more than a compelling story—it’s an artistic reawakening. A quadriplegic and force of nature in every discipline she touches, Emery recently made her stand-up comedy debut with encouragement from comedian Michelle Buteau. This fall, she’ll return to the stage at Bregamos Community Theater in New Haven, Connecticut.
“My background in documentary sharpened my sense of emotional truth,” Emery said. “But fiction gave me the freedom to explore the unspoken, the unresolved. Tanya’s story is personal—not just for her, but for anyone carrying questions from the past.”
Community work in STEM
A creative visionary, Emery is also the founder of URU: The Right to Be, Inc., a New Haven-based nonprofit advancing equity in education and STEM. Her body of work includes the children’s series Little Man and the inspirational books Against All Odds: Black Women in Medicine and Master Builders of the Modern World: Reimagining the Face of STEM. She was named an AAAS IF/THEN Ambassador for her trailblazing efforts.
