Nia Haqq and Michael Muchioki

Nia Haqq and Michael Muchioki, two lives cut short.

They were young, Black, good people with a promising future.

Nia Haqq and Michael Muchioki

The couple reminds me of my deceased wife and I, 25 years ago just finishing college, landing good jobs, and looking forward to our marriage and life.

The difference here is Nia and Mike will never be able to share the wonderful experience of marriage, starting a family, and enjoying their successful careers like we did.

Now, instead of planning a wedding, their families are planning funerals and asking the question, WHY?

When the couple returned home from a night of celebrating their engagement at Delta’s Lounge in New Brunswick, N.J., they were confronted by armed gunmen and murdered in cold blood in front of their home in Jersey City, N.J.

Did the gunmen know Nia Haqq and Michael Muchioki? Was it jealousy?

No. Police believe it was a random robbery and carjacking attempt gone wrong.

Today, hundreds of mourners attended Nia Haqq’s funeral at Newark Symphony Hall, and mourners will attend Michael Muchioki’s funeral, tomorrow in Jersey City, N. J.

Words cannot express the anger I feel about what happened to this young couple. To take one’s life, is an act of selfishness.

When is enough, enough?

The Unheard Voices family would like to extend our condolences to the Haqq and Muchioki families.
