After being found guilty on 15 counts, former Rutgers student Dharun Ravi faces risk of deportation to India, experts say.

According to a report by Star Ledger, Ravi, who was born in India, will likely have to defend himself from deportation whether or not he does some jail time.

“There’s no doubt that the government will initiate removal proceedings against him,” said Michael Wildes, an immigration law specialist practicing in Manhattan.

Deportation proceedings usually start after a person is sentenced. Federal immigrations determines “criminal convictions are aggravated felonies or “crimes of moral turpitude,” or those involving criminal intent”.

Right now it is too early to tell because there is no immigration case law on invasion of privacy.

Ravi was offered a plea bargain that would have only gave him probation, and the prosecutor’s office would have helped him fight deportation, but he declined the offer and went to trial.
