According to TMZ, the San Diego County medical examiner’s office has confirmed the report and says Seau died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the chest.

The medical examiner’s office says Seau’s family has yet to decide whether to turn the NFL legend’s brain over to outside researchers for study.

There are reports a Boston University research center has already requested to examine Junior’s brain — to see if there’s a link between his suicide and concussion-related injuries he sustained during his NFL career

NFL Career

Junior Seau is seen as one of the greatest middle linebackers and credited with making the “middle line backer” position physical. He was a 12-time Pro Bowler and 6-time First-Team All-Pro, was selected fifth overall in the 1990 NFL draft after an outstanding collegiate career at USC. He played with the San Diego Chargers through the 2002 season, spent 2003-2005 with the Miami Dolphins, and then signed with the New England Patriots in time for the 2006 season.

He leaves behind three children and an ex-wife.
