When I was a little girl my mother sat me down and said in the world we live it’s hard to be Black and it’s hard to be a woman. As a Black girl you will deal with things you  shouldn’t even have to know about, but that is a fact of life. No matter what, never let people categorize you and make you something you’re not.

Now back then I thought she was  exaggerating. I had friend that was a different skin color than me. I felt I got treated normally and anything out of place was just a mistake. Then I got older and started to notice things. For example, a teacher would assume I didn’t  understand and know things other students did just because I lived on the rougher side of town. Also there’s the assumption that I can’t use correct grammar just because I’m Black. And of course I’m hostile, rude and ignorant, as a Black girl.

Everyday I’m faced with unfair stereotypes about who I am and what I should be. As a black girl people limit you to what they think you’re only capable of. But if I learned nothing else in life, I know I have to fight the stereotypes every day to get to where you want to be in life, otherwise this world will eat you alive.
