Zendaya wears faux locs
For the 87th annual Oscars Feb. 22, 2015, Zendaya decided to strut with some faux locs. Now despite the onslaught of compliments there always has to be that ONE with a smart ass remark. That ONE with the smart ass remark was Giuliana Rancic.
Comments by Giuliana Rancic on Zendaya
Giuliana Rancic is one of the many hosts for Fashion Police. The premise of the show is to basically discuss celebrities and what they wore on the red carpet. They bash them or praise them all depending on if they approve of what they wore or not.
Giuliana stated on Fashion Police that it looks as if she (Zendaya) “she smells like patchouli oil and weed.” Really Giuliana, that’s what you think of people who have locs?
My opinion
Well I am a woman who has locs. And I would like to have you know that I never smell like weed as I am not a weed smoker.
Not everyone who has locs indulges in the habit of weed smoking. And to imply that only shows that you are another person who indulges in the stereotypes that society tries to place on people. Who exactly would you feel or rather, how do you feel when people address your weight or lack there of? It doesn’t feel too good when people imply you are bulimic does it? So how dare you place a stereotype on someone else?
Fortunately Zendaya is PERFECTLY capable of defending herself. Zendaya decided to take to Twitter with a response to the blatant ignorance.
“There is a fine line between what is funny and disrespectful. Someone said something about my hair at the Oscars that left me in awe,” the actress posted on Twitter.
“I was hit with ignorant slurs and pure disrespect. To say that an 18-year-old young woman with locs [dreadlocks] must smell of patchouli oil or ‘weed’ is not only a large stereotype but outrageously offensive,” … “I don’t usually feel the need to respond to negative things, but certain remarks cannot go unchecked.
“There is already harsh criticism of African American hair in society without the help of ignorant people who choose to judge others based on the curl of their hair…”

Sadly Giuliana responded with a half assed apology. She didn’t really bother to acknowledge that she did or said anything wrong. It was more like “I’m saying sorry because I know I have to not really because I want to” kind of response.
Maybe its just me but I personally will never understand the ignorance that is happening so openly. For instance the news reporter for FOX who referred to the music during Lady Gaga’s performance as “Jiggaboo” music. But that’s a whole other story.
Am I the only person that feels like we’re slowly going back in time?
