Marilyn Mosby was thrust into the spotlight when she was presented as the State’s Attorney for the city of Baltimore.

Earlier today, she announced after a thorough investigation, six officers were charged in the connection with the murder of Freddie Gray.

Gray’s death has resulted in demonstrations and protests in the city of Baltimore looking for change when it comes to police brutality, racial profiling, and police misconduct. Citizens are now relaying on Mosby for that change.

Here are some facts about this inspiring woman:

1. Mosby is only 35 years old and has been holding office for three months.

She is the youngest chief prosecutor of any major city in America. After graduating from law school, Mosby joined the Baltimore City State’s Attorney’s Office.

2. Mosby is a native of Boston, MA who comes from a family of police officers.

Her mother, father and grandfather were police officers. Mosby was a student participant in the nationally renowned school desegregation program, Metropolitan Council for Educational Opportunity (METCO). She got interested in law after the murder of her cousin in 1994 who was mistaken for a drug dealer.

3. She is a first-generation college graduate

Mosby earned her degree from Tuskegee University in Political Science. She earned her law degree from Boston College Law School.

4. She was working as counsel for Liberty Mutual Insurance when she decided to run for Baltimore’s state’s attorney.

Marilyn Mosby campaigned on a pledge to keep repeat offenders off the street and vowing to start a diversion program that would help young drug offenders avoid getting more serious criminal records. Her surprise victory in November over Gregg Bernstein, who had served one term as the city’s state’s attorney, made her the youngest chief prosecutor in a major U.S. city.

5. She is married to Nick J. Mosby, 7th District Baltimore City Councilman. They have two daughters.
