Jean Elie (Ahmal on HBO Insecure) sits down with Geekset on their new series “1 on 1’s w/Deuces” to discuss being a heterosexual man and playing a gay character on screen.

In the interview, Elie details how important it was to him to get it right and do the character justice, to not just something he would be proud of but the community as well. When asked about his approach to the role he stated:

“I had some people i could pull off of and research, because representation is so important and I wanted to make sure I presented a person, before anything…cause Ahmal is a person. I didn’t want to harp to much on what his sexual preference is, it was more about who this person is, what he represents, what he talks about and the experiences he been through”, Elie stated.

Elie also talks about his chemistry with actor/writer Natasha Rothwell, the many projects he is working on and what got him into anime.
