A Massachusetts teacher has been fired after instructing students to wear Black face for a Black History Month project.

The incident, which happened in a classroom with toddlers, took place last Tuesday at Montessori school IC Kids in Newton.

IC Kids apologized about the incident in a Facebook post then posted a statement on a window at the school.

“To celebrate ‘black history month‘, a teacher in toddler classroom [sic] at ICKids planned and carried out an activity that involved black masks ‘blackface.’ [sic] One of the parents brought it to our attention and was offended; The teacher apologized to the parent,” the statement read.

The statement also said the teacher involved “has since been released from her employment”.

School indefinitely closed

Due to criticsm and “protests happening at the center that will put the children at risk”, the school has closed indefinitely, the statement read.

There was no announcement on the school’s reopening.

“In the event that we reopen our doors, all staff will be trained in Diversity and creating curriculum for the birth to 5-year-old age group,” they wrote.
