Monique Melton, a passionate advocate for wealth redistribution and community support, has launched a powerful fundraiser to provide direct financial relief to Black families struggling with debt.

The initiative focuses on paying off a range of debts including: mortgages, student loans, medical expenses, and credit cards.

A GoFundMe has been organized to help support the initiative. At the time of the posting, more than $72,000 has been raised. Monique hopes to raise at least $2.5M to help provide debt relief.

“I personally know what it’s like to only have $5 in your checking account, maxed-out credit cards, and still have time before the next paycheck. And while every Black family has unique needs, it’s important to know that Black folks are owed a tremendous debt—one that can never fully be repaid,” Melton said.

“We cannot go back in time and prevent the tremendous harm from ever being done, and we certainly cannot bring back the many lives and dreams lost as a result of generations of oppression. We can make a difference to repair some of the harm done to the Black folks living today, and that can be done in many ways, and wealth redistribution is one of them.”

Melton says there are no strings attached and the funds will not be used for business purposes nor for any exchange of goods or services.

“This fundraiser is for the community and is not affiliated with any of my business or professional endeavors. This money will be used to pay off debt for Black families,” the fundraiser reads.

Initiative

With Melton’s initiative, she emphasizes the importance of utilizing wealth redistribution to empower Black families.

“When we consider the massive amount of wealth that folks have been able to amass from the abuse and exploitation of Black folks that has its origins in slavery and continues today, it’s important to know that wealth redistribution is an integral component towards repair, resistance, and liberation,” Melton said.

The fundraiser will support various families in need. Contributions can be monthly. For more information, visit here.
