Beloved Mississippi news anchor Celeste Wilson dies suddenly at 42

Celeste Wilson, a weekend news anchor for Mississippi’s WAPT 16, has passed away.

On Aug. 27, the news station confirmed that Wilson died from a heart attack. She was 42.

Wilson had only recently joined the Jackson-based ABC affiliate, but her impact was immediate. Colleagues praised her for her professionalism, warmth, and unwavering dedication to the craft of journalism. “Though Celeste had only been with us a short time, we were already touched by her professionalism, warmth, and dedication,” WAPT shared in a heartfelt statement.

Originally from New Orleans, Wilson began her broadcasting journey at the CBS affiliate in Monroe, Louisiana. She earned her master’s degree in journalism from Arizona State University. Wilson also worked at KARK in Little Rock, Arkansas, where she was remembered as “a bright spot” on the morning team.

Her colleagues at WAPT recalled her recent coverage of the Girl Scouts of Mississippi’s Women of Distinction Induction breakfast, noting how she brought grace and enthusiasm to every assignment. Anchor Megan West reflected, “She was new to our team and so lovely… It is such a shock, and our hearts are broken for her family”.
