Police shooting claims man’s life
On the evening of Aug. 21, 2020, Sgt. Sean DeShader shot and killed Best, 39, in a bedroom doorway of his apartment.
The shooting took place during heightened emotions towards police violence, particularly against Black people.
Months prior in March 2020, Breonna Taylor was killed by Louisville Police, followed by George Floyd, who was killed by Minneapolis police in May 2020.
Over the next couple years, Best’s family fought for a criminal indictment against DeShader, whom a state grand jury eventually declined to indict.
Hasani Best settlement
Best’s two young children will receive $575,000 to be invested in an annuity after attorney fees and disbursed when the children reach 18 and 23 in scheduled payments over time, according to two Dec. 18 court orders.
His young daughter, who had not yet turned one when he was killed, will receive the first payment in 2037 when she turns 18.
Best’s youngest son will begin to receive the money over 10 years beginning in 2041, when he turns 23.
The family originally sought $25 million for the children.
