Stars such as Dwyane Wade, Gabrielle Union-Wade, Symone and Amber Mark have signed an open letter urging the protection of $50 million in federal funding for LGBTQ+ youth suicide prevention services. The Trevor Project, which serves nearly 50% of crisis contacts through the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, faces potential funding cuts that could impact its ability to provide life-saving support.
Jaymes Black, CEO of The Trevor Project, emphasized the importance of entertainment industry voices in advocating for LGBTQ+ youth. “Suicide prevention is about people—not politics,” Black stated. “Millions are fighting for LGBTQ+ young people to lead the happy, healthy lives they deserve.”
Grassroots Fundraising for the Trevor Project Gains Momentum
Beyond celebrity endorsements, community-driven fundraisers on GoFundMe have surged, with supporters rallying to sustain The Trevor Project’s mission. Campaigns range from personal challenges, such as a 100km walk, to fantasy football tournaments and Pride Month events.
The Trevor Project estimates that 1.8 million LGBTQ+ young people in the U.S. seriously consider suicide each year, with at least one attempt every 45 seconds. The organization continues to advocate for federal funding while leveraging grassroots donations to maintain crisis services.
With celebrities and everyday supporters uniting, the movement to safeguard LGBTQ+ youth is gaining momentum. As Pride Month approaches, the call for action remains urgent.
