A uniformed police officer who was severely beaten by a random person, was saved by a Good Samaritan, police say.

Police say Officer Israel Valentin was outside his patrol car in Plainfield, New Jersey around 4:30 p.m. Sunday, when he was approached by Andre Henderson.

Officer Valentin is recovering and listed in good condition at a local hospital. He sustained broken ribs and trauma to his head. Police say he may not have survived the attack if the good samaritan didn’t intervene.

Some witnesses watched but were too scared to intervene. The good samaritan, who has not been identified, drove by witnessing the incident occur. The samaritan got out of his car, and used a baseball bat and ordered Henderson to leave the cop alone.

While the good samaritan struck Henderson with a baseball, another citizen called for help on Valentin’s radio.

Henderson has been charged with numerous crimes, and is being held in Union County Jail in lieu of 1,000,000 bail.
