Juneteenth and Caribbean Festival : More than 1,000 expected as groups recognize two historic events

EDISON, N.J. –The NAACP’s Metuchen-Edison Area Branch (MEAB), the Edison Job Corps Academy and the Jamaica Organization of New Jersey (JON-J) will unite to celebrate 50 years of independence for Jamaica as well as Juneteenth, which commemorates the ending of slavery in the U.S.

Featuring News 12 New Jersey anchor Carissa Lawson as mistress of ceremonies, the free event will be held Saturday, June 16, noon to 6 p.m. on the grounds of the Job Corps Academy at 500 Plainfield Ave., Edison, N J.

“I am happy to be with our African Diaspora brothers and sisters from Jamaica as we both celebrate our Independence,” said Reginald Johnson, president of the NAACP-MEAB.

“For African Americans, Juneteenth is a day to reflect on the past as well as a day of renewal in hopes of a newer, kinder human race.”

Supported by the local business community and expected to draw several civic and political leaders, the celebration will feature Caribbean cuisine and artistic performances.

“Jamaicans in New Jersey and all over the world are thrilled about their 50-year milestone,” said Jacqueline Lewis, president of JON-J.

“This festival attracts people of all backgrounds. If you love Caribbean culture and African American culture, you should come to this festival.”
