Update: Sharmeka Moffitt has been charged.

Sharmeka Moffitt, the 20-year-old who claimed she was attacked and burned by three men wearing hoodies, may now be charged with falsifying the attack.

According to Franklin Parish District Attorney John “Mack” Lancaster, Moffitt may face criminal charges for her false claims.

Lancaster tells KSLA News 12 he will likely file charges against Moffitt after he has a chance to go through the official investigation reports.

“There are charges that are appropriate in this case. First of all, I wish miss Moffitt the best and a speedy recovery. But, there are definitely charges that could be filed. After I review the reports we’ll see what are the appropriate charges. But, this could have been an incident that incited riots. It infused a lot of fear and apprehension in the Winnsboro and Franklin Parish community.”

“I do think that the community handled this very well; the restraint the community showed in not jumping to conclusions and not having mass rallies. The rallies and vigils that they did have were prayer vigils for this young girl that was badly burned. They weren’t in the spirit of condemning anyone. The community did a very good job in this.”
