Police in Winnsboro, Louisiana confirmed Monday that a woman was set on fire over the weekend and racial slurs had been painted on her car.

Louisiana woman set on fire, allegedly

20 year-old Sharmeka Moffitt told police that she was walking along a trail in a city park when she was attacked and set on fire by three men wearing white hoodies on Sunday, according to KNOE.

Moffitt suffered extensive burns below her neck on her chest and back all the way down to her calves.

Winnsboro Police Chief Kevin Cobb said that the FBI was investigating whether the incident was a hate crime, but authorities declined to classify the attack as racially motivated on Monday. The Franklin Parish Sheriff, Louisiana State Police and the state fire Marshall’s office were also participating in the investigation.

Authorities have not identified, nor made any arrests in the case as they haven’t determined the sequence of events or whether the attack was random or planned.

The victim’s condition

Moffitt is in critical condition this afternoon at LSU Health Sciences Center in Shreveport.

A Facebook page “Prayers for Sharmeka Moffitt” was created on Sunday night to support Sharmeka Moffitt where over 11,000 have liked the page in support.
