George Zimmerman, the man who fatally shot Trayvon Martin, was released from Seminole County Jail shortly after midnight Sunday.

Zimmerman is awaiting trial for the February 26th shooting death of Trayvon Martin. Trayvon was visiting his father in Sanford, FL when he was shot and killed by George Zimmerman.

Zimmerman has maintained his innocence, saying the shooting was in self-defense.

As reported by the Associated Press:

“The neighborhood watch volunteer was wearing a brown jacket and blue jeans and carrying a paper bag. He walked out following another man and didn’t look over at photographers gathered outside. He then followed the man into a white BMW vehicle and drove away.

Moments before, two Seminole County sheriff’s vehicles blocked access to the intake building parking lot where George Zimmerman was being released. Zimmerman emerged after two public information officers confirmed the credentials of the photographers outside.

No questions were shouted at Zimmerman, and he gave no statement.

His ultimate destination is being kept secret for his safety and it could be outside Florida.

George Zimmerman’s arrest is the latest of several brushes he has had with the law following his acquittal in Martin’s death, a case that drew worldwide attention as it sparked nationwide debates about race and self-defense laws.

The choking accusation was disclosed for the first time by a prosecutor at Zimmerman’s first appearance Tuesday before a judge. Zimmerman’s girlfriend, Samantha Scheibe, feared for her life because Zimmerman mentioned suicide and said he “had nothing to lose,” according to Assistant State Attorney Lymary Munoz.

After the hearing, Zimmerman’s public defenders said he did not appear to be suicidal and expressed confidence he would be acquitted of any wrongdoing.

“He doesn’t appear to be a danger to himself or a danger to anybody else,” said public defender Daniel Megaro.”
