About Unheard Voices Magazine

Unheard Voices Magazine is an award-winning online news magazine founded by retired computer scientist Mr. Covin.

While a resident of Neptune, New Jersey in the early 90s and 2000s, Mr. Covin began to see social issues and the overall need for a positive voice for people of color in the community.

As a concerned citizen, Mr. Covin approached the local media outlet in town on the issues he wanted to raise awareness on. Unfortunately, the outlet felt the issues did not serve the media company’s objectives.

But Mr. Covin wouldn’t let that stop him. He realized he could utilize his English and Africana Studies degree from Rutgers University and put his voice to use.

Ultimately, Mr. Covin wanted to create a platform for the voiceless to be heard. In 2004, Mr. Covin’s vision came to fruition by creating a newsletter called Unheard Voices.

Unheard Voices Newsletter Circulation

With the help of his son, Unheard Voices newsletter was circulated in Neptune, New Jersey and was placed in corner stores in Asbury Park, New Jersey.

In 2007, Unheard Voices branched off online, starting a digital media platform not only covering Asbury Park, Neptune, and Long Branch voices but national stories on everyday people.

About Unheard Voices Magazine Building A Digital Presence

While building their digital presence, Unheard Voices has worked with diverse organizations such as Midtown Urban Renaissance Corporation, Two River Theater, Kappa Alpha Psi, Omega Phi Psi, Long Branch Housing Authority, local NAACPs, churches, and public relations firms to cultivate a positive voice for people of color; in addition to tackling issues on race relations and social issues within the African American and Black community.

With its hard-hitting coverage, Unheard Voices would become instrumental in bringing light to stories such as Trayvon Martin, Je’Rean Blake, Ahmaud Arbery and working hand in hand with Penny Dees to bring more attention to the tragic murder of her daughter 12-year-old Quiana Dees.
