Recently, I did a presentation in one of my college business classes about top online businesses and how the market is emerging. I thought this would be great to share for inspiring entrepreneurs.

Top Online Businesses: no particular order

Ever wanted to be your own boss?

Online businesses can be very profitable, only if you do your research and know what you’re getting yourself into.

The journey isn’t fly-by-night, it can fail, but with persistence it can be rewarding. I’m going to name, my top 5 online businesses, in no particular order.

1. Online publications/newspapers/magazines
ex: Unheard Voices Magazine, New York Times Online

The truth of the matter is, a lot of people are putting down the paper and reading it online. It was about seven years ago since I last seen a newspaper at my doorstep. Of course, I still subscribe to my favorite magazines. But content online is more accessible, faster, and will sometimes have more exclusives than already made in advance magazines. You can offer subscriptions on your site or you can offer the content free of charge. You will make your revenue by placing advertisements on the site.

2. Social Networking

ex: Facebook.com
It can be very profitable, but I would do extensive research before starting a site like this.

3. Blogging

Write about your favorite topics and get paid for it. This is probably one of the biggest trends out, and a profitable venture to create revenue and build your own brand.

4. Internet Marketing

ex: Google, web publisher
The internet’s key revenue driver is buying and selling ads. If you’re a web publisher, you’re posting advertisements on your website for companies to advertise their product. The more traffic you drive to your website, the higher bids can be, and revenue can be made.

5. E-Commerce

ex: amazon.com, ebay.com
Selling products. Start your own online store today.

Others online businesses that didn’t make the list:

Domain Hosting Business
Web-Hosting Business
Affiliate Marketing
