Security guard Aland Etienne remembered as ‘Hero’ after New York City mass shooting
Aland Etienne leaves behind a young son who, according to family members, has not yet been told of the tragedy. The child turns seven on Saturday.

Aland Etienne, a 46-year-old Haitian-born security guard, was among four victims killed in the July 28 mass shooting in Midtown Manhattan. Etienne was working in the building’s lobby when a gunman opened fire with an M4-style rifle, according to police.
Etienne’s union, 32BJ SEIU, confirmed his death and honored him as a “New York hero.”
“Every time a security officer puts on their uniform, they put their lives on the line,” said union president Manny Pastreich. “Their contributions to our city are essential, though often unappreciated. We will remember Aland Etienne as such.”
Aland Etienne: A Father, Brother, and Beloved Community Member
Etienne leaves behind a young son who, according to family members, has not yet been told of the tragedy. The child turns seven on Saturday.
“He was more than a brother — he was a father, a son, and a light in our lives,” wrote Etienne’s brother, Gathmand Etienne, in a public Facebook tribute. “Our hearts are shattered, and we’re asking for your prayers and strength as we navigate this painful time.”
Etienne had worked in the building since 2019 and was known for his quiet strength and dedication to keeping tenants safe.
Shooter Identified, Investigation Underway
The gunman, identified as 27-year-old Shane Devon Tamura of Las Vegas, also killed off-duty NYPD officer Didarul Islam, Blackstone executive Wesley LePatner, and Rudin Management associate Julia Hyman before taking his own life. Authorities said Tamura had a documented mental health history and referenced chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) in a suicide note2.
The building houses offices for the NFL and other major corporations. One NFL employee, identified as finance staffer Craig Clementi, was seriously injured but remains in stable condition.
Law enforcement officials are reviewing surveillance footage, executing search warrants, and interviewing witnesses. The NYPD urges anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers.
