Former NBA player Jason Collins announced he is undergoing treatment for Stage 4 glioblastoma, a severe form of brain cancer.

He shared the news Thursday in an interview with ESPN’s Ramona Shelburne, emphasizing his choice to speak when ready.

Collins explained that his family respected his wishes, waiting until he could personally reveal details about his condition.

Symptoms and Diagnosis

Collins said he began experiencing symptoms this past summer, including difficulty packing for a trip to the US Open.

A CT scan in August revealed a brain tumor, later confirmed as Stage 4 glioblastoma, which cannot be safely operated on.

He described losing mental clarity and short‑term memory within hours, comparing the experience to “Dory from Finding Nemo.”

Jason Collins Brain Cancer Treatment and Prognosis

Collins has undergone radiation therapy and is taking Avastin, a drug designed to slow tumor growth.

Doctors told him the average prognosis with standard care is 11 to 14 months.

Collins said he prefers pursuing treatments that could one day become new standards of care for others.

Jason Collins Legacy and Resilience

Collins played 13 seasons for six NBA teams, including the Nets, and retired in 2014.

In 2013, he made history as the first openly gay active NBA player, a milestone he approached with authenticity.

He said he wants to face his diagnosis the same way: unafraid, determined, and on his own terms.

Collins emphasized that life improves when people show up as their true selves, both publicly and privately.

“This is me. This is what I’m dealing with,” he said, underscoring his commitment to honesty and resilience.
