7‑year‑old Aiden, who we previously reported was in a medically induced coma after being hit by a truck while trying to catch his school bus in Rome, Ga., is now in rehabilitation, his mother says.
His mother said on Facebook that Aiden is undergoing physical, occupational and speech therapy six days a week, Channel 2 Action News reports. She wrote that he is slowly talking more and remembers colors, numbers, his birthday and his city.
Crash Happened as Aiden Ran Toward His Bus Stop
Aiden was hit on Chateau Drive around 7 a.m. on Aug. 21 while running toward his older brother, Rome police told Channel 2 Action News.
Police said preliminary findings show the driver was not speeding and that the roadway was wet from earlier storms.
A Floyd County police officer was driving nearby and became the first responder on the scene.
Emergency crews rushed Aiden to Atrium Health Floyd Medical Center. He was then flown to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta.
Family Shares Extent of His Injuries
Aiden suffered
- a traumatic brain injury known as a diffuse axonal injury
- a ligament tear connecting his skull and neck
- a broken pelvis, broken ribs
- a fractured collarbone
- a fractured wrist
Adults near the scene, including two nurses, were able to stabilize Aiden’s neck and performed CPR before paramedics arrived.
Mother Says Recovery Will Be Long
Aiden’s mother said he can move his feet one at a time with a therapist’s support and sometimes communicates with a thumbs up or thumbs down. She wrote that “talking and walking will be a long journey,” but added that he is laughing more and making progress every day.
The family launched a GoFundMe to help cover medical expenses, travel costs and household bills.
