Nolan Wells’ family demands ‘thorough’ investigation: “What we’ve been told does not make sense”
The family of 18‑year‑old Nolan Xavier Wells is demanding a “thorough” and transparent investigation into his death on Horn Island.
JACKSON COUNTY, Miss. — The family of 18‑year‑old Nolan Xavier Wells is demanding a “thorough” and transparent investigation into his death on Horn Island, saying early explanations from Mississippi authorities “do not make sense.”
Civil rights attorney Ben Crump and Rev. Al Sharpton joined the family Friday for a press conference, calling for an independent review.
What Happened to Nolan Wells?
Wells vanished July 4 after traveling by boat with a group to Horn Island. The group returned to the mainland without him. His mother reported him missing that night. Search crews found his body July 6. Authorities have not released a cause of death and say toxicology results are pending.
The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office says the investigation remains active. Officials say they do not suspect foul play, but the family questions that conclusion.
Wells’ Family Says Early Accounts Conflict With Evidence
Sharpton said details provided to the family “do not add up,” including claims that Wells argued with friends and that his phone and keys ended up in their possession.
According to Crump, some witnesses said Wells planned to return to the boat with friends, while others claimed he intended to remain on the island. Crump also questioned why Wells’ cellphone was reportedly left behind if he planned to stay on the island.
“There are too many questions to close this investigation,” Sharpton said. “What we’ve been told does not make sense.”
Crump said the family question Mississippi authorities and wants an independent investigation. He noted that Wells was the only Black teen among three white friends who returned with his belongings.
“These glaring contradictions cannot be ignored,” Crump said. “The family will not accept an accidental drowning without proof.”
His father, Elmore Wonsley, said one friend first denied having Nolan’s keys, then handed them over minutes later. “It’s not adding up,” he said.
As part of this process with transparency, the family sent Wells’ body to Washington, D.C. for an independent autopsy. They say they want answers from experts outside Mississippi.
The Ben Crump law firm, the attorney representing the family, urge anyone with information to contact his office.
Authorities Seek Public’s Help
The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office asked anyone who visited Horn Island on July 4 to share photos or videos. Officials say Wells may have chosen to stay on the island, a claim the family rejects.
A GoFundMe campaign now supports Wells’ family as they pursue answers. The fundraiser says donations will help cover funeral expenses, legal costs and travel related to the investigation. At the time of this report, it has raised nearly $400k.
