New Haven, CT community mourns beloved 13-year-old who died after jumping in river

NEW HAVEN, Conn. — The New Haven community is mourning 13‑year‑old King Best, whose body was recovered from the West River on Sunday after he was reported missing late last week.

Police say King jumped into the river early Thursday morning and never resurfaced. A fisherman found his body near Orange Avenue three days later, according to officials.

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner ruled his death drowning, and investigators said they found no evidence of foul play.

New Haven police said King had been visiting his 21‑year‑old sister when he slipped out early Thursday morning to see his girlfriend. Loved ones located him by tracking a device attached to the keys he carried, according to the family’s GoFundMe.

Family Remembers King’s Creativity and Kindness

King’s family described him as a kind, creative boy who loved music, video editing and track and field. He played the drums, made short videos and enjoyed competing. They said he was full of potential and carried a gentle spirit.

King was preparing to enter eighth grade at Roberto Clemente Leadership Academy, where he had been a student since kindergarten. According to the fundraiser, staff members said he connected easily with classmates and brightened classrooms with his smile.

“His smile, gentle spirit, and kind heart touched everyone who had the privilege of knowing him,” the fundraiser said.

GoFundMe Launched to Support Family

A GoFundMe created by King’s relatives has raised more than $2,000 to help with funeral and memorial expenses.

Organizer Marquetta Hellamns wrote that the sudden loss has left the family devastated and struggling to navigate the emotional and financial challenges that follow the death of a child.

“The sudden passing of King has left us not only grieving, but also navigating the many challenges that come with saying goodbye to someone so cherished,” Hellamns wrote.

The fundraiser says donations will help cover funeral costs, allow family members to take time away from work and provide stability “as we navigate the weeks and months ahead.”
