STOCKBRIDGE, Ga. — A Georgia honor roll student with dreams of becoming a nurse was fatally shot by a police officer Nov. 3, leaving his family and community demanding answers.

Tyrie Howse, 16, died following an encounter with a Henry County police officer near a Krispy Kreme in Stockbridge.

According to WSB-TV, classmates described Howse as a straight-A student who regularly wore medical scrubs and looked forward to his future.

His death has raised questions about the officer’s actions and what prompted the initial police encounter.

What Happened During the Police Shooting?

According to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, the incident unfolded around 6:33 p.m. in the restaurant’s parking lot on Highway 138.

An officer approached Howse and a 17-year-old and briefly spoke with them.

Investigators said the officer then ordered the older teenager to remove his hands from his pockets.

The 17-year-old allegedly handed a handgun to Howse, who ran from the area carrying the weapon.

The officer pursued Howse on foot and ordered him to drop the gun, according to the GBI.

Investigators said Howse did not comply, prompting the officer to fire his weapon.

Emergency personnel provided medical assistance, but Howse died at the scene. Authorities recovered a handgun nearby.

However, investigators have not publicly explained why the officer initially approached the teenagers or whether Howse pointed the weapon.

Classmates Remember Honor Roll Student With Nursing Dreams

Beyond the circumstances of his death, classmates remember Howse for his academic achievements and compassion.

According to FOX 5 Atlanta, Howse was taking nursing classes and hoped to become a pediatric nurse.

Friends said he enjoyed caring for children, especially his sister’s baby.

Meanwhile, classmates remembered a teenager who helped others prepare for tests and frequently checked on his friends.

Howse had also recently started a job but never received his first paycheck, a family friend told FOX 5 Atlanta.

Family and Community Demand Answers

On Saturday, Nov. 7, family members and friends gathered in Stockbridge to honor Howse.

Mourners released red balloons, his favorite color, while sharing memories of the teenager.

Quinn Barnes, a longtime family friend, questioned why the officer approached Howse and his friend.

Witness Quan Smith also questioned the officer’s response during an interview with WSB-TV.

“I feel like the officer could’ve handled that differently,” Smith said.

Georgia Authorities Continue Investigation

The GBI is conducting an independent investigation at the Henry County Police Department’s request.

Authorities have not publicly identified the officer who fired the fatal shots.

Additionally, investigators have not disclosed whether the teenagers were suspected of criminal activity before the encounter.

Once the investigation concludes, the GBI will submit its findings to the Henry County District Attorney’s Office for review.

Meanwhile, Howse’s loved ones continue seeking answers and accountability as they mourn a teenager whose future was cut short.
