Former Baseball standout Rio Foster makes encouraging progress after traumatic brain injury in 2025 car crash
Los Angeles Angels prospect Rio Foster was enjoying a breakout baseball season when a devastating car crash nearly took his life.
Los Angeles Angels prospect Rio Foster was enjoying a breakout baseball season when a devastating car crash nearly took his life. More than a year later, the 23-year-old continues fighting to regain his independence.
Foster suffered a traumatic brain injury, skull fractures and facial injuries in the September 2025 crash. Although he has made significant progress, his family says he still faces a long road to recovery.
His mother, Iris Cleveland, has shared encouraging updates about his condition. She says his memory, concentration and communication have improved, but mobility remains one of his biggest challenges.
Promising Baseball Career Interrupted by Crash
Foster was a rising player in the Angels organization when the crash changed his life.
The Georgia native played for the Tri-City Dust Devils, the Angels’ High-A minor league affiliate in Washington state.
He had just completed an impressive August, batting .333 with seven home runs in 26 games. His performance earned him Northwest League Player of the Month honors.
Foster was also preparing to compete in the Arizona Fall League, another opportunity to showcase his talent.
However, those plans came to an abrupt halt Sept. 5, 2025.
According to MLB.com, Foster was seriously injured in a vehicle crash in Richland, Washington. He was thrown from the vehicle and rushed to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.
The accident left the young athlete facing a much different challenge than anything he had encountered on the baseball field.
Mother Shares Progress as Rio Foster Continues Rehabilitation
Since the crash, Foster has worked through an extensive recovery process with his family by his side.
Cleveland says her son has regained important cognitive abilities, including improvements in his memory and communication.
Still, his physical recovery has proven more difficult.
According to GoFundMe, the family is seeking specialized rehabilitation equipment, including a standing frame and a mobility device known as a Zeen.
The equipment would allow Foster to spend more time upright and potentially improve his ability to move independently.
For Cleveland, every improvement represents another step toward helping her son reclaim parts of his life.
Supporters Raise More Than $90,000 for Recovery
Foster’s injuries have also brought significant financial challenges for his family.
A GoFundMe campaign has raised more than $90,000 to help support his ongoing recovery and rehabilitation needs.
The baseball community has stepped forward, with Angels players Yusei Kikuchi and Jo Adell among those contributing to the fundraiser.
Additionally, the Angels committed to continuing Foster’s salary and health insurance coverage through 2026.
While his baseball future remains uncertain, his family remains focused on helping him recover.
And through everything he has endured, Cleveland says one familiar part of her son’s personality has never changed.
“If you ever met him, he always had a smile on his face and he still got a smile on his face,” she said.
