Beloved Virginia teen dies one day before high school graduation
18‑year‑old Virginia high school senior Dominic McClair died suddenly of cardiac arrest just one day before he was set to graduate.
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — 18‑year‑old Virginia high school senior Dominic McClair died suddenly just one day before he was set to graduate, his family told WAVY TV 10.
McClair died on June 11, the night before his graduation ceremony at Princess Anne High School. His mother said he had shown no signs of illness and had no known medical conditions. Doctors later confirmed cardiac arrest as the cause of death.
Dominic McClair’s Mother Found Him Unresponsive in His Bedroom
McClair’s mother told WAVY she went to check on Dominic because his cousin was coming to visit to give him a haircut for graduation. She said he appeared to be relaxing as usual, wearing headphones and watching TV.
“I flipped on the light and said, ‘Hey Dominic,’” she recalled. “I said it twice, and he didn’t say anything… he was just laying there with his eyes up.”
McClair’s mother said she tried to wake him but realized he was unresponsive. Dominic’s sister, who is studying medical assistance, checked his pulse as the family called 911. According to McClair’s mother, the line was busy for several minutes before they reached a dispatcher. Paramedics arrived and attempted to stabilize him before transporting him to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Dominic McClair’s Family Says He Had No Health Issues
According to WAVY TV 10, Dominic had no history of medical problems and had not complained of pain or discomfort before his untimely death. His mother said the sudden loss left her asking “why” as she tried to understand how a healthy teen could collapse without warning.
McClair’s mother wrote on GoFundMe that she had been excited to watch her son “step into adulthood and pursue his dreams,” but instead faced “the unimaginable task of planning my son’s funeral.”
Dominic Was Looking Forward to Graduation
Dominic was described as a hardworking student who earned good grades, stayed out of trouble and planned to attend trade school. He had been preparing for graduation day and was excited to walk across the stage, his mother said.
Family Attended Graduation in His Honor
The family attended the ceremony the next day, where school staff reserved a section for Dominic’s relatives. His counselor presented his diploma to his mother, who said the moment was emotional for everyone who knew him.
McClair’s mother remembered her beloved son as a highly intelligent young man who had a bright future ahead of him.
“He had his whole life ahead of him,” she told WAVY.
“His smile could light up a room, and his presence brought joy to our family and friends,” she wrote in the GoFundMe.
The GoFundMe is accepting donations to assist with the costs of Dominic’s untimely death.
