Grammy‑winning jazz singer Cassandra Wilson dies at 70

Cassandra Wilson, the acclaimed jazz singer whose smoky contralto and genre‑blending style reshaped modern vocal jazz, has died at age 70, her family announced. She passed away Tuesday morning at her home in Jackson, Mississippi. 

Mississippi Roots Shaped Her Early Musical Identity

Wilson was born in Jackson on Dec. 4, 1955, and grew up in a household steeped in music. She began piano lessons at age 6, learned guitar by 12 and was performing as a vocalist by the mid‑1970s.

She attended Jackson State University and Millsaps College, where she studied literature and music while performing in local venues. Because Mississippi’s musical traditions shaped her earliest influences, Wilson carried the region’s sound into her phrasing, tone and storytelling.

Her achievements later earned her a marker on the Mississippi Blues Trail, recognizing her impact on the state’s cultural landscape and her role in preserving its musical heritage.

Jazz Singer Cassandra Wilson: A Career That Expanded Jazz’s Boundaries

Wilson moved to New York in the early 1980s. There she joined the M‑Base Collective, a group known for experimental rhythms and improvisation. That environment pushed her toward the genre‑bending approach that became her signature.

Her breakthrough arrived with Blue Note Records. She released New Moon Daughter, which earned the Grammy Award for Best Jazz Vocal Performance, and continued her eclectic approach on albums including Traveling Miles, her tribute to Miles Davis, Belly of the Sun, Glamoured and Silver Pony.

Her 2008 collection Loverly brought her a second major honor in the jazz world and reinforced her reputation for reimagining standards with emotional depth and inventive arrangements.

TIME magazine once described Wilson as “America’s best singer,” praising her imagination and unmistakable tone.

In March 2022, she received the National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Masters Fellowship, one of the nation’s highest honors for jazz artists.

Her family said she died peacefully in Jackson and requested privacy as they mourn. Wilson’s cause of death has not been released publicly.
