“It is with profound sadness and a heavy heart that I announce the passing of His Majesty the Omukama of Tooro, King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV,” Akiiki, said in a post on X on Thursday.

Officials did not disclose a cause of death. However, government minister Balaam Barugahara said shortly before the announcement that the king had been critically ill and receiving treatment in the United States.

King Oyo Nyimba: Youngest Reigning Monarch

Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV was the King of Tooro, a small kingdom in Uganda’s west near the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Rukidi IV ascended the throne in 1995 at after the death of his father, Rukirabasaija Patrick David Matthew Kaboyo Olimi III. He was crowned at just three years old. The moment drew global attention and earned him recognition in the Guinness World Records as the youngest reigning monarch.

Although Uganda is a republic led by an elected head of state, several traditional monarchies — including Tooro — continue to preside over their cultural territories as they were structured in the pre‑colonial era. Moreover, their political power is symbolic, yet they hold significant cultural influence across their communities.

Continuity of the Crown Assured

The Tooro Kingdom confirmed that Rukidi IV left behind a prince who will serve as heir. The identity of the heir will be revealed later in accordance with Tooro traditions. The monarchy emphasized unity and calm as the kingdom enters a period of mourning.

A Cultural Leader With National Influence

Though his role carried no formal political authority, Rukidi IV wielded considerable cultural influence. His leadership resonated across western Uganda, where Tooro’s traditions remain deeply rooted. His death triggered widespread grief on social media and across national media outlets. Ugandan opposition leader Bobi Wine called the news “devastating” and wished the king eternal peace.
