Rhonda, a speculative fiction author from Trinidad and Tobago who writes as R. S. A. Garcia, is preparing for multiple surgeries after a year of escalating medical issues. She was diagnosed with breast cancer last December and underwent an urgent mastectomy on her right side. She completed eight cycles of chemotherapy in September.
Because she is BRCA2 positive, her doctors advised preventative surgery, including a mastectomy on her left side and later reconstructive procedures. However, recent tests revealed concerning signs of endometrial cancer, prompting doctors to recommend a full hysterectomy.
Mounting Medical and Household Strain
Rhonda said she does not expect to work for six months to a year due to recovery time and additional surgeries. She lost her job after her first operation, leaving her sister to cover household expenses.
During chemotherapy, a bathroom leak caused water damage to their home’s foundation, forcing costly repairs. An inspection later found significant structural issues, including roof leaks, electrical problems and damaged flooring. Their credit cards are maxed out, and they liquidated insurance policies to stay afloat.
Additionally, her sister now works a short‑term job with no paid leave, making it impossible to qualify for loans. Rhonda said the two of them are struggling to manage daily needs while preparing for at least two surgeries and possibly four.
Fundraiser Seeks Support for Surgeries and Repairs
A verified GoFundMe organized on Rhonda’s behalf outlines the financial pressure she faces. Donations will help cover medical expenses not covered by the public health system, home repairs and living costs during recovery. Extra funds may allow her sister to take time off work or help them hire part‑time assistance.
Rhonda said even small contributions matter as she navigates treatment, debt and urgent home repairs. She emphasized that community support will help her focus on healing while managing the next phase of her cancer care.
