College running back dies after medical emergency on sideline

MISSOURI — College running back MicahJo Barnett died Saturday after experiencing a medical emergency on the sideline during William Jewell College’s season opener, according to school officials.

Emergency Strikes Moments After Touchdown

Barnett collapsed roughly 20 minutes after kickoff of the Division II matchup against Fort Lewis College. He had scored a 1‑yard touchdown with 5:15 left in the first quarter, giving William Jewell a 7–0 lead. The game stopped at the 4:32 mark, and emergency personnel rushed to assist him.

He carried the ball six times for 30 yards before the medical emergency occurred. First responders transported him to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Police released no additional details about the cause.

College Confirms Death, Plans Vigil

William Jewell College posted a message titled “Jewell Mourns Loss of Football Student‑Athlete MicahJo Barnett,” featuring his photo and the words “Forever a Cardinal.” The school said, “Our thoughts and prayers are with MicahJo’s family, our students, the Cardinal Football family, and the rest of our community during this time of loss.”

A vigil for Barnett and his family was scheduled for Saturday night on the campus quad. Officials encouraged students to seek support through counseling services and the chaplain’s office.

Community Rallies Around Barnett’s Family

The college football community is rallying around Barnett’s family following his death. A verified GoFundMe launched Sunday raised more than $26,000 in less than 24 hours, with organizers describing Barnett as a “talented and kind young man” loved by teammates and friends.

Barnett, from Shawnee Mission, Kansas, was beginning his third season at William Jewell. He combined for 457 rushing yards and six touchdowns across his first two seasons and earned all‑state honors at Liberty North High School, where he helped win a Missouri championship.

Barnett’s death halted and later canceled the game. Teammates and coaches said he was a respected leader whose energy and character shaped the program.
