Beloved Kansas City mother killed after defending children during shooting at family barbecue

Kansas City, MO — Kansas City mother Alexis Rayford is being hailed a hero after she died defending children when gunfire erupted at a family barbecue on Aug. 9.

Rayford, 47, was shot in the 2500 block of Jackson Avenue, according to the Kansas City Star..

Police said they provided aid at the scene before Rayford was taken to a hospital. Rayford later died from her injuries.

Alexis Rayford’s Family Says She Died Protecting Children

Rayford’s family has created a GoFundMe to help during this difficult time.

Rayford’s family wrote that she was shot while trying to shield children during the chaos. They described her as a loving mother of two daughters and a proud grandmother who often stepped in to protect kids at family gatherings.

Moreover, relatives said they are still trying to process the sudden loss.

“We are heartbroken and still trying to process this devastating loss,” the family wrote in the fundraiser.

GoFundMe Launched for Support

Rayford’s family launched the verified GoFundMe to raise $3,500 for “the beautiful and proper burial she deserves,” according to the fundraiser page.

The campaign states that donations will help cover funeral expenses and support the family as they navigate their grief.

“Any donation, prayer, or share would mean more to us than words can express,” the family wrote.

Relatives said the community’s support has helped them stay grounded as they plan Rayford’s burial and care for her daughters and grandson.

Police Continue Investigate Shooting

Kansas City police have not announced arrests or identified suspects.
