Teen missing for four years found alive as authorities say she was held captive
Joniah Walker, who went missing at age 15 in June 2022, was discovered in a home in Blacksburg. Her recovery ended a search that stretched across states and years.
A Wisconsin teen who vanished four years ago has been found alive in Virginia, where authorities say she was held captive since the day she disappeared. Joniah Walker, who went missing at age 15 in June 2022, was discovered in a home in Blacksburg. Her recovery ended a search that stretched across states and years.
How Joniah Walker Disappeared
Investigators say Walker left her Milwaukee home after a man she met online arranged an Uber to pick her up outside a Chicago movie theater. Police allege the man, 37‑year‑old Owen Anderson, had groomed her for years. They say he immediately cut off her communication by throwing away her cellphone and a burner phone he had previously sent her. Her family said her phone going straight to voicemail was the first sign she was in danger.
Family Criticized Early Response
Walker’s disappearance drew national attention. Her relatives said Milwaukee police moved too slowly and missed key investigative steps. They said they gathered doorbell camera footage themselves and pushed for more urgency as days turned into years. Because of that, they felt forced to conduct their own search efforts.
Authorities Describe Prolonged Captivity
Police say Anderson held Walker in the Virginia home for the entire four‑year period. Court records allege she endured sexual and physical abuse. Investigators say she rarely left the residence and had no access to communication or transportation. They also said she was isolated from neighbors, which made discovery more difficult.
Charges Filed Against Suspect
Milwaukee County prosecutors have charged Anderson with kidnapping and child abduction. He remains in custody in Virginia and is awaiting transfer. Police said they found no evidence of a trafficking network and believe the case centers on grooming, coercion and prolonged captivity.
Unanswered Questions Remain
Walker’s recovery raises questions about how she remained hidden for so long. Investigators say Anderson controlled her movements and monitored her closely. They also said she had been groomed to trust him, which made escape more complicated. Her family said they never stopped searching and always believed she was alive.
Authorities are working with victim specialists as Walker begins her recovery. Police said she is safe and receiving care. Her family asked for privacy as they reunite with her after four years of uncertainty.
