California woman relearning to walk and speak after near‑fatal crash involving young drivers, ages 7 and 4

Kiara Bowling, the 31-year-old California woman we reported on last month who was struck by a car driven by young brothers ,is relearning to walk and speak. The brothers, ages 7 and 4, took their parents’ car keys and struck her from behind on an Oakland sidewalk.

In an interview with ABC 7, Bowling’s family calls her a “walking miracle” after doctors and loved ones feared she might not survive.

On Aug. 7, Bowling was walking her best friend’s dog when the boys drove off while their parents slept and hit her from behind. Surveillance video and witness accounts confirmed the children had taken the keys before leaving the house.

Because the impact was severe, witnesses performed CPR until paramedics arrived. Bowling suffered a traumatic brain injury and remained hospitalized for weeks.

Kiara Bowling: A Promising Future Interrupted

Before the crash, Bowling was in her final semester at Cal State East Bay and preparing for law school. She had recently completed a Harvard‑linked summer program and was selected as Miss California Regency International 2026.

Now, she is relearning basic skills, including walking, speaking, eating, coloring and assembling puzzles. Her aunt said Bowling is determined to progress but understands she must pace herself.

Daily Therapy and Progress

Bowling receives daily occupational, physical and speech therapy. Her family says each step is a milestone, and her progress continues even when the pace feels slow.

During a recent hospital visit, Bowling thanked nurses and staff for helping her regain strength. She remains motivated despite the long recovery ahead.

Emotional Reunion With the Dog She Was Walking

One of Bowling’s most emotional moments came when she reunited with Grizzly, the dog she was walking during the crash. The dog was also injured but survived. Bowling recognized him immediately and greeted him from her hospital bed.

Community Support and Fundraising

A GoFundMe created by her family has raised more than $116,000 to help cover medical bills and therapy costs. Supporters across the Bay Area have shared messages of encouragement as Bowling continues her recovery.

Doctors estimate her recovery could take up to two years, though her family hopes she can leave the hospital by December.
