Maryland 12-year-old boy saved mom’s life by stabbing boyfriend during domestic attack
12-year-old Maryland boy Xavier Leathers intervened in a domestic attack, stabbing his mother’s boyfriend to stop the assault.
PRINCE GEORGE’S COUNTY, Md. — A 12-year-old Maryland boy is being praised by police and family members after he intervened in a domestic attack, stabbing his mother’s boyfriend to stop the assault. Authorities say the boy’s quick actions likely saved his mother’s life.
Early-Morning Attack in Temple Hills
Police say the attack unfolded just after midnight Saturday inside a Temple Hills apartment. The boy, identified as Xavier Leathers, woke to the sound of his mother being choked by her boyfriend. He told news outlet WUSA9 he feared “something bad would happen” if he didn’t act.
Xavier said the man had already choked his mother twice and struck him during the struggle. He ran to the kitchen, grabbed the sharpest knife he could find, and returned to stab the attacker twice near the rib cage. The assault stopped immediately.
Police Praise Boy’s Quick Thinking
Responding officers commended Xavier, telling him he did a “good job” protecting his mother. The boyfriend, identified as 42-year-old Ronnie McCain, was treated for minor injuries and later taken into custody. Police said the investigation remains active.
Xavier suffered a cut during the struggle but was otherwise unharmed. His mother was taken to a hospital and later filed for a protective order. She said she didn’t initially know why the choking stopped until officers explained her son had intervened.
Family Says Boy Saved His Mother’s Life
Xavier’s mother saix she believes her son’s actions prevented a fatal outcome.
“I’m thankful he was brave enough to do it because I probably wouldn’t be here,” she said. Xavier echoed that sentiment, saying he acted because he feared his mother “wouldn’t make it.”
Police continue to investigate the incident, but family members and officers agree the boy’s decisive response stopped a violent attack that could have turned deadly.
