7-year-old Georgia boy in medically induced coma after being hit while running to school bus stop

Update: Aiden is out of a medically induced coma and is now in rehab, his mother says.

A 7‑year‑old Georgia boy named Aiden remains in a medically induced coma after a pickup truck hit him while he ran toward a school bus stop in Rome.

Crash Occurred as Aiden Ran Toward His Bus Stop

Police said the crash happened Aug. 21 shortly after 7 a.m. on Chateau Drive as a white Ford F‑150 traveled north. Aiden entered the roadway near 48 Chateau Drive.

Investigators stressed he was running to the stop, not boarding a bus or crossing near activated bus lights.

Officials also said the driver was not speeding, showed no impairment and stayed at the scene.

Child Airlifted After Emergency Response

A Floyd County officer reached the scene within moments and called for emergency crews.

Aiden was taken to Atrium Health Floyd Medical Center, then flown to Scottish Rite Hospital in Atlanta.

His family said he is intubated in a medically induced coma with:

• a diffuse axonal injury
• a severe ligament tear
• a broken pelvis
• broken ribs and fractures to his collarbone and wrist

Additionally, police noted the roadway was wet from storms earlier that morning.

Bus Route Records Raise Safety Concerns

Newly obtained bus‑route records show Aiden’s assigned stop was scheduled for 6:21 a.m., about 40 minutes before the crash.

The bus later looped back through the area on the opposite side of the street, though no designated stop existed there.

Witnesses said some students who miss their pickup sometimes wait for the bus when it returns, a practice Rome City Schools says is not allowed.

Furthermore, officials said the district follows Addy’s Law, which urges bus routes that reduce roadway crossings.

Family Seeks Support as Aiden Fights for Recovery

A GoFundMe is helping Aiden’s parents cover medical, travel and household expenses as they remain at his bedside and care for their two other children.

The investigation remains open as police continue reviewing evidence and bus‑route procedures.
