SAN FRANCISCO — Earth, Wind & Fire drummer John Paris has woken up from a medically induced coma after suffering a medical emergency before a concert earlier this month, the band confirmed to People. Paris, 58, is now responsive and showing encouraging signs as doctors continue monitoring his recovery.
Band Confirms Major Turn in Paris’ Condition
Earth, Wind & Fire abruptly canceled shows on Aug. 6 after Paris collapsed before a performance with Lionel Richie. Doctors placed him in a medically induced coma as they stabilized his condition.
On Aug. 20, a representative for band member Verdine White told People that Paris had awakened. The update marked a significant shift after days of uncertainty and cautious medical evaluations.
Family’s Earlier Signs of Hope
Before Paris regained consciousness, his wife Kathy Merrick, a member of Honey Cone, shared that he squeezed her hand and their daughter’s hand when asked if he could hear them. She told People the moment gave the family renewed strength during a difficult stretch.
“Hope is being restored, and prayers are being heard,” Merrick said at the time.
She added that Paris continued to fight through each challenge, and the family stayed encouraged by every sign of progress.
Fundraiser for Earth, Wind & Fire drummer John Paris Surpasses $80,000
A GoFundMe supporting Paris and his family has raised more than $80,000, with donations climbing as fans learn of his improvement. The fundraiser helps cover medical costs, travel expenses and lodging while the family remains at his side.
Support has come from fellow musicians, longtime fans and industry colleagues who have followed Paris’ career and the band’s updates.
Earth, Wind & Fire said Paris’ awakening is a meaningful milestone but emphasized that recovery “is not a straight line.” The group asked fans to continue sending prayers and messages as Paris undergoes intensive care and prepares for the next phase of treatment.
