A New Orleans musician is hospitalized with a critical condition that has left him unable to swallow, prompting a fundraiser to help cover mounting medical and personal expenses.
Detroit Brooks, a longtime New Orleans musician, is hospitalized with a critical condition that has left him unable to swallow.
New Orleans musician Detroit Brooks faces medical condition
Doctors say he cannot eat or drink, and will undergo surgery. Because of his condition, Brooks has been unable to perform, which has created significant financial strain.
Brooks has also been living with chronic pain and struggling with basic daily tasks. His health issues have progressed to the point that he cannot work, leaving him with mounting medical expenses and personal bills.
Fundraiser Aims to Cover Medical and Living Costs
A GoFundMe campaign has been launched to help Brooks cover surgery costs, medical care and personal expenses while he remains hospitalized.
Organizers say community support is essential as Brooks faces debt and ongoing treatment needs. Additionally, they encourage supporters to donate or share the fundraiser to expand its reach.
Brooks’ musical background includes work with Eddie Bo, Dr. Michael White and Wynton Marsalis. He has also performed with organists Dr. Lonnie Smith and Ike Stubblefield, and frequently backed New Orleans jazz artists such as Donald Harrison Jr. and Herlin Riley. In 2010, Brooks released an album, On My Way Back Home.
Family and Supporters Call for Community Help
The fundraiser states that Brooks has been struggling “in ways no one should have to,” noting his inability to swallow and the financial pressure caused by his inability to work.
Supporters say any contribution will help Brooks manage medical bills and living costs as he prepares for surgery and recovery.
The campaign message reads: “Any support for Detroit Brooks would mean so much. If you are able to give, please consider donating or sharing this fundraiser to help ease the burden and stand with Detroit as he faces surgery and recovery.”
