Nolan Wells’ mom says she’s receiving hate mail after 18-year-old son’s death

Christine Wonsley, the mother of 18‑year‑old Nolan Xavier Wells, says she began receiving hate mail as her family continues pressing for answers in her son’s July 4 disappearance and death on Horn Island, Mississippi.

She posted the letter on Facebook and Instagram, calling the anonymous sender “bold enough to send this crap but not bold enough to list your return address.”

The mail included a photo of Wonsley at a press conference with Rev. Al Sharpton and attorney Ben Crump, marked with arrows and dollar signs. The letter did not have a return address. However, it appears to come from the Denver area based on the post stamp.

“Whoever sent this to my home, may the good Lord have mercy on your soul,” Wonsley wrote.

Wonsley said the message mocked her family’s efforts to learn what happened to her son.

Nolan Wells Family Questions Circumstances of Wells’ Death

Wells vanished on July 4 after traveling by boat with friends to Horn Island. His body was found two days later on the island’s northwestern tip.

The Jackson County sheriff and some of his friends have said that Wells opted to stay behind on the island without his phone, reportedly after meeting a young woman, but his family has questioned that account.

Wonsley said her son documented nearly every gathering with photos and videos. She said his Snapchat from that day showed no saved content, which “stood out immediately.”

Authorities said they saw no immediate signs of foul play, though the family has raised concerns and ordered an independent autopsy.

Wonsley ended her post with a message to the sender: “Please go touch some grass.”

Wells’ funeral is scheduled for July 20 in Ocean Springs, Mississippi.

His family continues urging peaceful support while they seek clarity about what happened on Horn Island.

On Thursday, July 16, Wonsley shared an emotional video thanking supporters for their “love” and “kindness” following Wells’ death.
