Actor and producer Malcolm-Jamal Warner died Sunday in an accidental drowning off the coast of Costa Rica. He was 54.

According to police, Warner was caught in a strong ocean current while swimming near Cocles Beach in Limón. Despite efforts by bystanders and emergency responders, he was pronounced dead at the scene. The official cause of death was asphyxia.
Malcolm-Jamal Warner was a cultural icon
Warner rose to fame in the 1980s as Theo Huxtable, the only son on The Cosby Show, earning an Emmy nomination in 1986 for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series. His portrayal helped redefine Black representation on television, with The Cosby Show becoming a cultural touchstone both domestically and abroad.
Acting
Beyond his breakout role, Warner built a multifaceted career as an actor, director, poet, and musician. He starred in Malcolm & Eddie, Reed Between the Lines, and most recently appeared in The Resident and Alert: Missing Persons Unit. He also voiced The Producer in the PBS series The Magic School Bus.
Not All Hood (NAH) podcast
Last June, he launched the podcast Not All Hood (NAH) with cohosts Weusi Baraka and Candace Kelley. He’s used the space as a means of breaking down barriers to mental health and a variety of issues affecting the Black community.
Malcolm-Jamal Warner’s Legacy
A New Jersey native named after Malcolm X and jazz pianist Ahmad Jamal, Warner was known for his artistic depth and social consciousness. He won a Grammy Award in 2015 for Best Traditional R&B Performance and was nominated again in 2023 for Best Spoken Word Poetry Album.
In a 2024 interview with People, Warner credited his mother, Pamela Warner, for instilling values that guided his career. “Her advice is something I’ll talk about until my dying day,” he said.
Warner is survived by a wife, daughter, and a host of loved ones. Tributes from fans and colleagues continue to pour in, honoring his legacy as a trailblazer in entertainment and a voice for cultural empowerment.
