The U.S. Virgin Islands Department of Tourism and the Division of Festivals celebrate the success of the 2024 St. Thomas Carnival.

2024 St. Thomas Carnival

Kicking off with cultural staples including the Prince & Princess Show, Queen Show, Calypso Monarch, and Panorama, the St. Thomas Carnival festivities welcomed thousands of revelers, including locals, the diaspora, and visitors, to the shores of Charlotte Amalie for a multi-day celebration spotlighting the broad culture and traditions of the island territory.

“Carnival in the U.S. Virgin Islands is growing, allowing us to display our rich and vibrant culture to the world,” shares Commissioner Joseph Boschulte of the U.S. Virgin Islands Department of Tourism. “This success is a testament to the continued hard work of our Department of Tourism and Division of Festivals staff whose unwavering efforts showcase our home islands.”

Performances

Machel Montano kicked off six nights of free nightly concerts in the Festival Village, followed by performances from KES the Band, Sizzla Kalonji, Patrice Roberts, Barrington Levy, Adam O, TeeJay, Spectrum Band, Temisha, and more. On Saturday night, international superstar Shaggy closed out the village, performing hits like “It Wasn’t Me,” “Boombastic,” and “Angel” in front of thousands of fans.

Children’s and Adult Parade days were filled with revelers in bright and ornate costumes adorned with jewels, feathers, and traditional madras fabrics.

“Every year, we want to bring the best experiences to the people of the U.S. Virgin Islands for carnival. We are extremely excited to continue growing our national celebrations and welcoming the world to experience them with us,” adds Ian Turnbull, U.S. Virgin Islands Director of Festivals.

About Family Empire : Houston

Exploring complex themes of generational wealth and the building of a family legacy, the 8-episode unscripted series follows the Bradens across four generations of Black excellence.

Synopsis

‘Sister cousins’ Nicole, Jermeshia and JaQuita have a collective dream to follow in the footsteps of their beloved grandmother and the Braden family matriarch, Oscarene, a real estate entrepreneur who built the family empire from the ground up and passed down this grit and determination to her children and grandchildren. “Here at OWN, we are always looking to shine a light on interesting people with stories that are entertaining and who also reflect our audience,” said Tina Perry, President, OWN. “Family Empire: Houston promises all of this and more – a dynamic family, vibrant culture and high-stakes scenarios we know our audience will respond to.” As the co-founders and managing directors of the Braden Real Estate Group, the Braden sister cousins are realtors, entrepreneurs and dream home finder extraordinaires with a pulse on the booming metro housing market of Houston.

But complications arise for the grandchildren as Oscarene contemplates dissolving the family assets in order to secure the financial futures of her own five children – Frank Jr., Charlotte, Cheryl, Nikki and Jackie.

Glasshaus Presents is proud to announce Grammy-winning artist Bilal on Live at Glasshaus, a mid-career retrospective featuring a supergroup of Questlove, Common, Robert Glasper, and Burniss Travis.

About Bilal’s Live LP

Live at Glasshaus, out June 14 during Black Music Month, sees Bilal at the peak of his powers, pushing the boundaries of a genre-defying catalog including 1st Born Second, his famously unreleased sophomore album, Love For Sale, Airtight’s Revenge, Common’s seminal Like Water for Chocolate, as well as the premiere of Humility.

Surrounded by an intimate studio audience of 100 fans, the project was recorded, filmed, and livestreamed from Glasshaus in Brooklyn, NY. With stripped-down arrangements and ecstatic performance, Bilal wove fresh interpretations of beloved catalog favorites spanning 23 years of recorded output. The album’s first single and video is “Something To Hold,” originally recorded during the height of the Soulquarian era. Now Bilal takes a raw approach with the live format, capturing his unparalleled talent and highlighting his artistic evolution:

Song from Bilal’s Live LP

Reflecting on the performance, Bilal says: “I felt comfortable to create because I knew I had some of the best motherfuckers in the world playing.” He continues, “I like intimate vibes where everyone’s drawing off the energy in the room. When you’re up there making something and giving, with the people up there listening and receiving, it creates this circular motion of energy, it’s a timeless moment.”

“The evening felt historic,” says Jarrett Wetherell, founder of Glasshaus Presents and producer of the album. “The audience was floored. So many masters creating in an intimate space together makes for a special production. We’re honored to serve Bilal, an artist in the truest sense.”
