Bringing MumBet’s Story to the Stage: A Theatrical Tribute to a Freedom Fighter
The initiative, titled “Help Bring the Story of MumBet to the Stage,” aims to raise awareness and funding to ensure her legacy is honored through live performance.

A new theatrical production is set to bring the remarkable story of Elizabeth “MumBet” Freeman to audiences, shedding light on the enslaved woman who fought for—and won—her freedom in 1781.
The initiative, titled “Help Bring the Story of MumBet to the Stage,” aims to raise awareness and funding to ensure her legacy is honored through live performance.
Theatrical production honoring MumBet
MumBet was born into slavery in New York. She was later enslaved in Massachusetts, where she overheard discussions about the Massachusetts Constitution, which declared that “all men are born free and equal.” Inspired by these words, she sought legal representation and successfully sued for her freedom in Brom and Bett v. Ashley, setting a precedent that contributed to the abolition of slavery in Massachusetts.
Fundraising Efforts
The upcoming stage production will honor MumBet’s courageous fight for justice, bringing her story to life through historical reenactments, powerful dialogue, and immersive storytelling. Organizers are calling on supporters to help fund the project, ensuring that her legacy reaches new generations.
A GoFundMe has been organized to help raise funds toward the project, set to hit the stage on Juneteenth in Falls Village, CT. While the production will run June 19, the fundraiser is still accept donating,
