Ashlyn was born with a rare genetic abnormality, called 1p34 deletion syndrome. The affliction develops when part of the first chromosome is missing. Very little was known about the disease when Ashlyn was born with it. Up until a few years ago, it didn’t have a name.

“My little girl was the light of my life and my family’s,” Horry told the Los Angeles Times on Tuesday. “It’s been tough, but we were blessed to have her for the time we did.”
